Canoeing/Kayaking

“May the wind be always at your back . . . (and) . . . The sun shine warm upon your face” as you take to the lakes and rivers of northern Minnesota for some of the best canoeing and kayaking opportunities and experiences possible.  From perfecting basic strokes and maneuvering techniques to setting the trim as well as bow and stern paddling canoes on Wolf Lake, Kamaji campers are able to put their skills to the test when participating in camp’s wilderness tripping program.

Trivia and little-known fact: Kamaji’s camp director from 1923 – 1951, Beatrice Berthold, developed and perfected the canoe-over-canoe rescue technique that was adopted by the American Red Cross and is still in practice today throughout the world and at Camp Kamaji!

Once our campers complete Kamaji’s Canoeing Trip Preparation course, they may choose to venture into solo kayaking where they learn how balance and posture play an important role in kayaking.  Torso rotation, wet exits, kayak-over-kayak rescues, J-leans, C-turns and hand rolls are skill sets taught Kamaji’s more advanced kayakers .
