Sailing
Unquestionably Kamaji’s sailing program is the most popular of all of camp’s instructional activities as evidenced by the number of campers (over 80!) who participate daily. Kamaji’s Yacht Club and Marina is home to a fleet of 5 X-boats, 6 Barnetts and two E-scows.
Kamaji’s believes in “learning by doing” so even novice sailors take the tiller in hand and helm the boat from the “set-sail!!” Five levels of instruction take a novice camper from tying knots to the rules of sailing, from rigging to derigging, from proper crew position to points of sail, from steering to trimming the sail, from tacking to jibing, from capsizing to recovery, from crewing to skippering, from soloing to racing.
Speaking of racing, in addition to participating in regattas with neighboring summer camps, Kamaji campers also compete in sailing ILYA (Inland Lake Yachting Association) sanctioned regattas on Gull Lake (Brainerd, MN) where they race against well-seasoned sailors, young and old alike.
Day sailing trips on near-by Cass Lake and the opportunity to spend three days sailing aboard a two-masted ketch on Lake Superior round out Kamaji’s sailing program.
